Just to let you know straight off: this is going to be one of those “oh my god you have to listen to this!!” posts. So if you’ve already been overfed with links, popups and spam today, check back another time because it would be a shame if you missed this altogether. All you early-adopters and webexplorers left reading this now: you’re in for a treat!

My singer-songwriter friend M. and I share a passion for all things HBO. Well, actually, I’m a small-time but adoring consumer (mainly the amazing show Six Feet Under) and he knows all there is to know and tips me off about anything worthwhile. Recently he told me about a new HBO show called Flight of the Conchords, about “New Zealand’s 4th most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo” Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who travel to New York in the hopes of hitting the big time. The show revolves around their hilarious songs and the best way to explain it is by seeing some of it.

Get an impression of the professional way in which Flight of the Conchords is managed:

Watch Jemaine cheering up downspirited Bret in a somewhat… unorthodox way:

Read the outrageous lyrics here!

The two actors/ musicians go by their own names in the show. In 1998, Bret McKenzie teamed up with university friend Jemaine Clement to create Flight of the Conchords and they have toured many countries as a comedy act. Bret also plays in a successful New Zealand reggae/dub band called The Black Seeds, who are incidentally playing at Lowlands in ten days time! Jemaine is one half of sketch comedy duo Humourbeasts with Taika Cohen. For backround info you can check their official website or this very decent fanpage.

There’s a lot of material to see on the HBO website if you want more. Sadly, the show is currently only being aired in the US…

So thanks to singer-songwriter friend M.! If you’re thinking “this guy knows his stuff!” you would be right, check out his music by clicking here 🙂

PS Flight of the Conchords goes very well with my overall kiwi-mood today, as long time friend and travelbuddy M. and I booked our February 2008 trip to New Zealand yesterday!!
